Sheds, Carports, and Outbuildings: Hardening Accessory Structures and Attachments
A burning shed near your home can ignite the house. Often the right move isn’t replacement — it’s relocation or detachment.
Carports, awnings, and attached structures are direct fire pathways. The 2026 SDC WUI Code §604.4 requires 10 feet of clearance around outbuildings; CDI Safer from Wildfires recognizes 30 feet from the home as the insurance-discount standard. Aim for 30 where feasible.

Attached Structures Are Direct Flame Conduits to Your Home
Per the 2026 SDC WUI Code §604.4, outbuildings must have a minimum of 10 feet of clearance to bare mineral soil in all directions, and vegetation between 10 and 20 feet must be fire-resistant landscaping. Combustible attachments — carports, pergolas, attached awnings — act as direct flame conduits and should be detached with a minimum 2-foot separation per CAL FIRE recommendation.
Sources differ on safe distance for sheds: the code requires 10 feet, CDI Safer from Wildfires recognizes 30 feet for the insurance discount. CWD recommends 30 feet as the practical default where feasible. If you can’t reach 30 feet, 10 feet of clearance plus the code-required vegetation management is the practical floor.
- Combustible attachments are direct flame conduits — detachment with 2 ft separation is the CAL FIRE recommendation
- 10 ft of bare mineral soil clearance required around outbuildings (2026 SDC WUI Code §604.4)
- CDI Safer from Wildfires recognizes 30 ft from the home as the insurance-discount standard for shed removal
- Relocation is often more practical and cost-effective than replacement
“Often the right move is relocation, not replacement.”Moving a combustible shed to 30 feet from the home qualifies for the insurance discount and costs far less than a full rebuild.
Quick Wins, Smart Retrofits, and Full Upgrades
Clearing and Vegetation Management
Same-day clearing and relocation — no construction required.
- Removing vegetation and combustibles around sheds and outbuildings to bare mineral soil within 10 feet (per §604.4)
- Clearing storage from under carports and awnings
- Maintaining fire-resistant landscaping in the 10–20 ft zone around outbuildings
- Trimming tree branches per Title 14 CCR §1299.03 (lowest branches at least 6 ft above ground)
- Removing combustibles grown on or against attachments (climbing plants, leaf accumulation)
Detachment, Separation, and Relocation
- Detaching combustible attachments from the home with minimum 2 ft open-space separation (CAL FIRE recommendation)
- Adding noncombustible barriers between attachments and structures
- Sealing gaps and openings in shed siding and foundations
- Relocating sheds to compliant distances (30 ft from home is the CDI Safer from Wildfires standard and CWD’s practical default)
Replacement and Removal
- Replacing combustible sheds with metal or 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.11-compliant outbuildings
- Replacing combustible carports, awnings, and pergolas with noncombustible alternatives
- Removing dilapidated or unused outbuildings entirely
- Coordinated accessory structure + fence + Zone 0 redesign
10 ft vs. 30 ft — what’s the difference? The code requires 10 ft of clearance to bare mineral soil around outbuildings. CDI Safer from Wildfires recognizes 30 ft from the home as the insurance-discount measure for shed removal or relocation. If you can reach 30 ft, do it — it earns the discount and gives meaningful fire separation. If you can’t, 10 ft of clearance plus compliant vegetation management is the practical floor.
Clearance and Relocation Work Often Starts the Same Day.
A Property Fire Risk Walk identifies outbuilding and attachment issues on site. CWD can often begin vegetation clearing, debris removal, and detachment work the same visit or the next day.
What the Rules Actually Say
- 2026 SDC WUI Code §604.4 — Outbuildings: 10 ft to bare mineral soil, fire-smart vegetation 10–20 ft
- 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.7 — Projections (governs attached structures like carports and awnings)
- 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.11 — Accessory buildings and miscellaneous structures
- Title 14 CCR §1299.03 — Tree pruning requirements within defensible space
- CAL FIRE Ready for Wildfire — Detach combustible attachments with minimum 2 ft separation
- CDI Safer from Wildfires — Removal of combustible sheds at least 30 ft from the home is a recognized discount measure
“Detach first, replace later.”A 2-foot open-space gap between a combustible attachment and your home breaks the flame path. It’s the minimum — and often the fastest win available.
Outbuilding Work Qualifies When Paired with Primary Structure Hardening
CDI Safer from Wildfires Discount
Removal or relocation of combustible sheds to at least 30 feet from the home is a recognized measure for the insurance discount.
California Wildfire Mitigation Program
Outbuilding work is eligible under CWMP when paired with primary structure hardening at the same property.
IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home
Accessory structure separation and Zone 0 compliance contribute to IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designation requirements.
