Windows, Doors, and Garage: Tempered Glass, Screens, and Ember Sealing
Windows often fail before flames reach the home. Most fixes are fast and inexpensive.
Radiant heat alone can break single-pane glass. Doors and garages are the most common ember intrusion points after vents. Most fixes are same-day; full window replacement is a longer-term insurance-driven upgrade.

Windows Fail Before Flames Arrive. Garage Doors Let Embers In.
Under the 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.8, exterior windows, glazed doors, and skylights must be multilayered glazed panels with at least two panes (one tempered), glass block, or rated for 20-minute fire protection. Tempered glass is roughly four times more resistant to thermal breakage than annealed glass.
Garage doors and entry doors are the second-most-common ember entry path after vents. The 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.9 specifies door construction requirements including solid-core wood dimensional minimums and 20-minute fire-rated alternatives.
- Radiant heat from approaching fire can shatter single-pane glass before flames arrive
- Garage doors are a primary ember entry point — gaps and seals matter
- Metal mesh screens on windows measurably improve performance under radiant heat
- Window and door upgrades are recognized CDI Safer from Wildfires discount measures
“The garage door is the second-most-common ember entry point.”After vents, it’s the opening most often responsible for interior ignition — and weather stripping is a same-day fix.
Quick Wins, Smart Retrofits, and Full Upgrades

Tempered Glazing Replacement
- Multilayered glazed panel replacement with at least one pane of tempered glass per §504.8 (commonly delivered as dual-pane tempered)

- 2026 SDC WUI Code §504.9 — Exterior doors: noncombustible, solid-core wood per spec, or 20-minute fire-rated
- 2025 CWUIC, Title 24 Part 7 — Formerly known as CBC Chapter 7A
- NFPA 252 / NFPA 257 / UL 9 — Fire tests for door and window assemblies
- UL 10B / UL 10C — Fire tests of door assemblies
